Webcast Software - Plays An Important Role At Every Stage Of The Webcasting Process

Webcasting involves transmission of on demand streaming media over the Internet to users. Webcast software is used at various stages in the Webcasting process. It is an important component for the display of optimum quality streaming media on the computer of a user.

This article will outline the various stages of the Webcasting process in which Webcast software makes its own contribution.

Webcast software makes its presence felt first in the live event recording stage. In this stage Webcast software is used to edit the audio visual feed recorded by DV CAM recorders. Such editing software is already built into the DV CAM recorders.

Two options are available to a Webcasting service provider.

One is to use the built-in software to edit the audio-visual recording. The trouble with the built-in editing software on the camcorders is that it is not of the highest quality that may be desired in a studio quality shoot. The other aspect about onsite editing is that the whole team's concentration is on recording the live event. Due to this it is not practicable to carry out the editing then and there.

The other option open to a Webcasting service provider is that editing of the live recording be carried out offsite after the complete recording is over in a studio. In a studio, professional quality editing software is available on computers. This method is better suited for editing the recording to bring out the best quality of the audio visual feed under the circumstances.

After the editing is over, the stream needs to be compressed. Compression is necessary as the edited recording, being resource intensive is not transmittable over the Web. To compress the edited recording, Webcast software in the form of encoding software is utilized. Encoding software compresses the stream through use of codecs. The compressed streaming media is then ready for transmission.

The feed in this form is then stored on streaming servers till the time comes when a user demands to watch it. It is then retrieved from the streaming server and transmitted over the Internet at high speed on to the user's computer. Here too, software is used.

On the user's computer, Webcast software in the form of a player is required to be already installed, to enable the display of the streaming media in the player window. Without the player, the user will not be able to display the live event, nor will he/she be in a position to download it on the computer's hard disk. Some feeds are such that you cannot download them even using the player.

Therefore, Webcast software plays a vital role at almost all stages of the Webcasting process, right from the feed recording stage up to its display on a user's computer. Webcast software can also be termed as video server - video - audio software.
