Webcast - An Effective Means Of
Communication Over The Internet
You normally watch on your television set
via a cable or an antenna, live or recorded TV programs broadcast from
TV stations. Webcasting technology allows you to watch on your Internet
connection equipped computer/cellphone, similar programs Webcast by
various service providers. The difference in the two is that the former
follows a set schedule to which you are bound.
The latter being an on-demand service,
provides you complete flexibility.
Webcast means transmission over the Internet
or sometimes even purely over an intranet of streaming media to a
single recipient or to multiple recipients simultaneously.
This article is about how webcasting is used
to communicate over the Internet.
Webcasting refers to 'linear streaming media
transmission over the Internet'. It is an umbrella term that includes
the complete process that begins with pre-production activities,
streaming media production/recording, editing, encoding, effective
storage on Web servers/CDNs and split-second on-demand retrieval,
continuous transmission over the Internet, and ends with
download/display on Internet enabled computers/cellphones.
Streaming means 'continuous', just as a
stream is continuous. Media can include video, audio, graphics, or
purely data.
Sometimes, you may not be in a position to
watch live or recorded music video concerts on TV or radio, because of
your busy schedule. In such situations, you need technology that offers
you the flexibility to watch such programs at your own convenience on
the click of a button.
Webcasting technology offers you
click-of-a-button flexibility to provide you any archived streaming
media based on your demand, which TV or radio stations cannot provide.
It can provide you distance education
lectures, presentations, how tos, advertisements, radio programs, and
television programs. It can also provide you music, video, movies,
news, congressional briefings, teletext, Webinars (the Webcasting
equivalent of seminars), new product unveilings, ideas, and knowledge
or information in any field.
Web conferencing is a special form of
Webcasting. It requires special video cameras, other equipment, and
accessories at the sites of all Web conferencing participants, who may
be spread over all over the world. Web conferencing can be used
effectively for a discussion between company executives, or as a
Webinar.
You need special software on your Internet
enabled computer that can receive and display streaming media.
The other aspect is that the Internet
connection you have must preferably be of the broadband variety. That
is if you do not want to wait for the period that a slow dialup
Internet connection will take to constantly buffer the streaming media
on to the relevant software that can display it on your computer.
If you follow the above guidelines, and pay
the requisite service charges to a Webcast service provider, you will
be able to receive virtually any streaming media archived by the
service provider, which you may be interested in. From the point of
businesses, a Webcast offers an effective communication medium to
market and sell their wares to their potential customers or to inform
about new products that they may have developed.
